Gangtok which means 'lofty hills' is the capital of the picturesque Himalayan state Sikkim. The history of Gangtok is shrouded in darkness except for the fact that its early history traces back to 1716 AD when the Gangtok monastry was built. The hill resort's reputation revolved around being a tiny hamlet till 1840. After the construction of the Enchey Monastery, it metamorphosed into a famous pilgrimage center. In due course of time, it served as a prime stopover point on the India-Tibet route during the colonial period. The hill town's taste of fame came in 1894 when the capital of Sikkim got shifted from Tumlong to Gangtok
Tsomgo Lake: Lying 40km northeast of Gangtok, it means "Source of the Lake" in Bhutia language. This placid lake is located at an altitude of 3780m and held to be sacred by the local people.
Nathula Pass: At an altitude of 14200ft, Nathula pass is the border between India and China in the Tibetan plateau. Only 56 km away from the Gangtok, tranquility of this place is very charming. Waving Chinese soldiers and Chinese tourists on the other side of the border is an added attraction.
Baba Mandir : Built in the memory of Harbhajan Singh, a sepoy in the 23rd Punjab Regiment, the temple lies between the Nathu –La and the Jelep-La Passes. Legend has it that he appeared in a dream a few days after he went missing while patrolling the border, and expressed a desire that a monument be built in his memory. His fellow soldiers then built a monument that has over the years acquired the status of pilgrimage centre. Believers leave a bottle of water to be collected a week later to be used for its healing powers.
Yumthang Valley : At an elevation of 11,800 ft. and 140 kms from Gangtok is a paradise for nature lovers, with a marvelous blend of flora & fauna, hotsprings and breathtaking scenic grandeur. The valley is also the home of Shingbha Rhododendron Sanctuary having 24 species of Rhododendrons. Shivmandir and Yume Samdong, located by are equally fascinating spots.
Night Stay at Lachung before Yumthang Valley :-
It is a village situated at a height of 8000 ft. It provides excellent village tourism facilities. Lachung has emerged as a tourist destination with the soaring popularity of Yumthang Valley which is just 25 kms from here.
Guru-Dongmar Lake:-
At an altitude of 17,800 ft, it is considered as one of the sacred lakes of the State both by the Buddhists and the Hindus. The lake remains milky in color throughout the year and is believed that Guru Padmasambhava blessed it while returningf from Tibet. A portion of lake does not freeze even in extreme winter.
Night Stay at Lachen before Guru-Dongmar Lake:-

For the discerning visitor looking for a quiet holiday Kalimpong offers hope! Be it a family holiday, a honeymoon trip or a package group, Kalimpong is still the picture-book old world "Hill Station".
Kalimpong sub-division is more of less, covered by forests and terraced agricultural land where seasonal food crops and vegetables are grown. Herbs and spices like ginger, cardamom and turmeric are also grown as a cash crop by the villagers. From tropical foothills to the alpine regions around 4000 flowering plants species including more than 400 species of orchids are found. An abundance of flowering trees, ferns, mosses, grasses and medicinal plants are represented in the region. Floriculture is another major economic activity in Kalimpong. There are numerous flower nurseries, many of world renown, producing plants for export and the home market. Cacti & Succulents, Orchid, colourful houseplants and bulbs in many varieties are some of the popular family of plants expertly grown. Kalimpong flower nurseries present a permanent year-round flower show.
Hanuman & Durga Mandir (Sherpa Taar):
Is along a watershed where Durga Mandir has been built. The fantastic view of Mt. Kanchenjunga and Teesta Valley in Sikkim can be seen in one single "Frame". The biggest statue (Eastern India) of Lord Hanuman has been recentlyinstalled here on a hillside cinverted into park. The picturesque Relli Valley is also seen with Lolaygaon and Samthar Plateau clearly visible.
Deolo Hill:
The higest point at 1704 mtrs. which provides a 360 degree panoramic view of entire himalayan range. The entire Kalimpong town and opsite hills of Durpin Dara with Darjeeling & Sikkim Hills & Valleys and Teesta are seen from here. There is a beautiful garden as well as a luxury tourist lodge with a fine restaurant. Pony rides are available for children.
Deolo Lake:
This is situated at aheight of almost 550 ft., just below the peak of Deolo Hill. The lake has a glorious view of the surrounding villages, Himalayan Ranges, Teesta and Relli River and of the Town. The lake is the reserver for water supply to the town.
Science center:
Situated near the Delo Hill, is a new upcoming place that is the Science Center, attracting considerable number of visitors specially students and the general public and tourists. There are many attractive galleries having exciting and interactive exhibits. An inflatable dome planetarium is also there with a capacity of 25 visitors at a time. Beside these galleries, a lush green park with exhibits on simple mechanics, sound , optics, pendulum, turn pulleys lifting load, hear echo of sounds, sympathetic swing, dinosaurs etc.
Dr. Graham's Home:
It is 3 Kms. from the town. Dr. John Anderson Graham established this school in the year 1900. This institition was established as an orphanage cum school for destitute Anglo Indian Children. It is now renowned regular co-educational school situated in a 500 acre campus. A unique feature is that the Chapel, Cottages and main school building are built in the old colonial style.
Mangal Dham:
The extremely beautiful and well maintained Hindu temple has been built by the Pranamis in memory of the Late Guru Shree 108 Mangaldasji who's Samadhi is located inside the temple.
Pine View Nursery:
One can marvel at the Cacti & Succulents and many more flowering plants.
The Durpin Hill:
This is an observatory pointabout 3 Kms. from Kalimpong from where the breath taking, bird eye view of the plains, Teesta river and Rangeet river can be seen. On a clean day the view of the entire range of the magnificent mountains Kanchenjunga, which is seen from here is unforgetable. It is also a pleasure to observe the neighboring places like western Sikkim, Peshok Tea Estate, Takdah, Tiger Hill Top, Nathula, Siliguri and plains of terai.
Durpin Monastery (Zang Dhok Palri Frodang Monastery):
Situated on top of Durpim Hills is the largest monastery. This monastery belongs to Nyingma-pa sect (maroon-robed). From here one gets a good view of the entire town and Dhelo Hill and the Himalayas.
Nature Interpretation Centre - Ecological Museum:s
This Museum situated a short distance from the town is one of its kind in this region. Photographs of the wild life, flora and fauna of the region are exhibited.
Lava:
A 32 Kms. drive from Kalimpong is situated at an altitude of 7200 ft (2350.0 mts.) Against a clear blue sky are held the breath views of the himalayan range-deep valleys, wooded ridges, snow peaks and pine trees. On a clear day one can see the Jele-La and Rachela Pass new the China border. Lava is the gateway to the famous Neora Valley National Park.
Lolaygaon (Kafer):
56 Kms. away from kalimping (24 Kms. from Lava) Lolaygaon offers a grand view of the Relli Valley and Himalayan Ranges. The place is worth staying overnight. from the Resort at Lolaygaon, if one takes a little bit of trouble in the early morning in reaching Jhandidara or Nok Dara the views of the Sunrise which os seen from this hill is something unique and is quite different from the sunrise seen from the Tiger Hill of Darjeeling
Munsong:
According to historians Munsong was originally inhabited by the Lepcha`s. The proiximity of the Historic Damsang , a 17th century fort built by Lecpha`s king , provided ample proof to this claim. Infact some believe that Munsong was also originally called Damsang . The Bristish arrived here in 1901 and started the Cinchona plantation. The main source of income for the family in this region is the plantation.
